Teams that enter in the basketball competition at World OutGames Miami will enter into one of the following divisions:

  • Men/Mixed Open A
  • Men/Mixed Open B
  • Men/Mixed Open C
  • Men/Mixed Masters 35+
  • Men/Mixed Veterans 50+
  • Women Open A
  • Women Open B
  • Women Open C
  • Women Masters 35+
  • Women Veterans 50+

If a Division has fewer than five (5) teams, the Division may be consolidated into another Division. All players in the Masters 35+ and the Veterans 50+ divisions must be the age required by the division by 31 December 2017. The Veterans 50+ Divisions will be a 3-on-3 tournament, played half-court. The Men/Mixed Category will follow a gender non-specific participation model. The Women's Category is reserved for players who identify as female.

Players may participate as part of only one team in the Open Division. Players may participate in the Open Division and either Masters or Veterans. For example, a player who is 36 years old may play in the Open B Division as well as the Masters Division. The tournament schedule will not take into consideration any conflicts in a player's schedule.

Teams must have a minimum of seven (7) players on its roster, with a maximum of  ten (10) players as well as up to three (3) non-playing coaches. Teams participating in the Veterans (50+) division must have a minimum of (3) players per team. Medals will be awarded to the top three (3) finishers within each division.

Skill Level

Based on evaluation of skill level in Pool Play throughout the tournament, World OutGames Miami has the sole authority to move a team to a different division.

Rules

The competition will be conducted under the rules of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), modified by the NCAA and the National Gay Basketball Association.

A summary of the rules is below:

  • Timing: The tournament will consist of two 20-minute halves, with a running clock. The clock will stop during a half as follows:
    • Clock stops only the last 2 minutes of the second half. If one team leads by 12 points or more, clock continues to run during the last two minutes.
    • Timeouts called only by the team coach.
    • Player Injury.
    • Technical fouls.
    • As directed by the officials.
  • No shot clock will be used.
  • Overtime periods: Overtime periods will be for a total of three (3) minutes with a continuously running clock except for the last one (1) minute of the period.
  • Timeouts: Each team will have two (2) timeouts per half, and one (1) timeout in overtime. Timeouts do not carry over from the first to second half or from second half to overtime.
  • Each team should have two (2) sets of jerseys with numbers, 00- 99.
