TAKES A VILLAGE, PEOPLE
Presented by Miami Gay Men’s Chorus.
It Takes a Village, People! …and yes it did! The Miami Gay Men’s Chorus celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Village People in 2017! Who knew that 40 years after they sang “Village people, now is the time…your fight is mine…Let’s fight for the right…your freedom’s in sight…we can’t be denied” that the living image of homo-erotic fantasy – the cop, the construction worker, the man in uniform…in leather…the cowboy and the chief – would still be relevant and the center of the party?! In the course of four decades, the Village People transcended gay culture and become part of what we know as mainstream America. What self-respecting person, regardless of gender of sexual orientation, doesn’t run onto the dance floor the second they hear the opening riffs to YMCA? It is with that in mind that the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus opens up the World OutGames cultural program by revisiting the music of the Village People and that of the decade that made them. ABBA, the Bee Gee’s, Queen, Simon and Garfunkel, Donna Summer, Earth Wind and Fire and the Eagles all created the soundtrack of the 70’s; the soundtrack that still brings us to our feet and reminds us that we should be dancing, Yeah!
